Mandatory e-invoicing in the EU: the status in every member state

Electronic invoicing is developing very unevenly across the European Union. Some countries have had mandatory B2B e-invoicing for years already (Italy since 2019), others are only now rolling out their national systems (Poland, France), and many still rely on voluntary adoption while waiting for the European ViDA framework (VAT in the Digital Age), which will make e-invoicing and digital reporting mandatory for cross-border B2B transactions across the whole EU from 1 July 2030. We wrote about the EU-wide picture and the strategic choice between a central system and the Peppol network in detail in ViDA, e-invoicing and Peppol: Which path should the Czech Republic choose?.

How does the Peppol network work?

Recently, the Peppol network has been discussed more and more often in connection with electronic invoicing. So let us look at how the Peppol network works technically.

Peppol started as a European network for electronic communication, and today it is used worldwide. It is a great example of how solving European fragmentation helped solve a global problem and opened space for additional value-added services.
Currently, more than 3 million companies from 118 countries are connected to the Peppol network.

Who needs Peppol? And is it really just another central point?

In recent years, Peppol has been discussed more and more often in Europe and beyond - a standardized network for exchanging electronic documents, especially invoices. But many business owners still ask: why do we actually need Peppol? And isn’t it just another central system that makes life harder?

Let’s look at it from both sides - from the perspective of the state and from the perspective of businesses.

Two layers of the problem: state versus businesses

1. The state and the fight against fraud

The state, and especially the European Union, faces losses caused by VAT fraud. One common answer is central monitoring - watching invoices and transactions in one place. Today we submit VAT control statements. But that is mainly a problem for the state, not for ordinary businesses. They simply have to accept it and pay for it, directly or indirectly.

ViDA, e-invoicing and Peppol: Which path should the Czech Republic choose?

The European Union is preparing a major VAT shift. The ViDA package (VAT in the Digital Age) will, from July 2030, broadly introduce mandatory e-invoicing and digital reporting for cross-border B2B transactions. This is not just another regulation. Businesses today spend huge amounts on moving documents by email, chasing missing invoices, manually retyping data, and fixing human errors. Moving to truly structured e-invoicing can cut those costs by tens of percent and speed up payments. The Czech Republic is therefore facing a strategic question: which technological path should it take?

Slovakia solved electronic invoicing for us. Let's fully use Peppol in the Czech Republic!

Electronic invoicing is getting closer, and we in the Czech Republic have a unique chance to hop on a moving train. From 1 January 2027, electronic invoicing will become mandatory in Slovakia. What does that mean for e-shops, what will it bring, and what conditions must be met? And most importantly, what huge positive impact will it have on the state of e-invoicing here in the Czech Republic? Let’s take a look.
